New Member Program set to develop software security standards for the automotive industry

Piscataway, NJ 18 December 2018 – The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (ISTO), an international federation of leading industry groups and consortia dedicated to the advancement of standardized technologies for the benefit of industry, today announces its newest member program, Uptane Alliance.

Comprised of automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and software developers, Uptane is an open source software product that enables automotive manufacturers to deploy critical software updates securely via over-the-air (OTA) programming, a protected method of software distribution. Uptane is designed to be highly flexible allowing for customizable, on-demand updates. The Uptane Alliance is a collective with the aim to standardize this technology.

“Secure software updates over-the-air are essential for keeping vehicles safe and secure,” says Andre Weimerskirch, chair Uptane Alliance and vice president, Cybersecurity, Lear Corporation. “Uptane provides guidance and a reference how to achieve the highest level of security for over-the-air updates.”

Uptane Alliance is actively seeking users to explore Uptane software for vulnerabilities and for security flaws following implementation. To get involved, visit the Uptane Alliance website or on GitHub.

Since its inception in 1999, ISTO has partnered with 50+ international industry groups providing the legal and operational frameworks and best practices required to accomplish technical missions quickly and cost-effectively.

“As more and more IoT-connected vehicles enter the market, the need for secure, universal standards increases,” said Marco W. Migliaro, ISTO president and CEO. “ISTO has a proven track record helping programs like Uptane mature and bring standards to market.”
